If only words could kill. Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's speech at the
58th session of the United Nations General Assembly was a sophisticated
decimation of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's Kashmir posturing, with
Mr Vajpayee declaring India's refusal to "let terrorism become a tool of
blackmail". Much as the practice has become routine - the General screaming
Kashmir from the UN rooftop, India compelled to an unfortunate slanging match
- the Prime Minister's observations on Pakistan this year stood a class apart
in their sophistication from President Musharraf's hackneyed
histrionics. And, the General had it coming.
"Yesterday, the President of Pakistan chose this august assembly to make a
public admission for the first time that Pakistan is sponsoring terrorism in
Jammu & Kashmir. After claiming that there is an indigenous struggle in
Kashmir, he has offered to encourage a general cessation of violence within
Kashmir, in return for 'reciprocal obligations and
restraints'," Mr Vajpayee said.
Commenting on the "extraordinary inability" of the UN Security Council to
arrive at a consensus on Iraq despite a complete agreement on basic
objectives, Mr Vajpayee said, "The reality is that international
institutions like the UN can only be as effective as its members allow it to
be." He identified three areas of introspection for the UN, especially in the
context of the unilateral US-led invasion of Iraq.
