Mar 09, 2003: Support India for Permanent Membership of UN Security Council

On February 27, 2003 U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), founder of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, introduced legislation in the House of Representatives supporting a permanent seat for India in the United Nations Security Council. Pallone said his legislation, a "Sense of the Congress," allows the U.S. House of Representatives to go on record in supporting India's bid for a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council.

There are several ways you can help India's bid to this powerful position it rightfully deserves.

1. Please forward this page to as many friends as possible.

2. Sulekha.com is circulating a global petition that seeks a permanent seat on the UN Security Council for India. Sulekha site says: This petition along with the list of signatories will be submitted to:
Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General, Heads of major states, Editors of 50+ major global media, Influential lawmakers in each of permanent member countries and the US Congress
Please sign this petition: http://www.sulekha.com/un

3. US India Political Action Committee (www.usinpac.com) is urging all to support Representative Frank Pallone's call for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council for India. USINPAC will pass the signed petitions to the members of the US Congress to support Rep. Pallone's legislation

4. It's understood that Rep Joseph Crowley (D-NY), Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans has agreed to co-sponsor the Pallone legislation.

It's VERY IMPORTANT that we work hard to get more House Representatives to co-sponsor the Pallone legislation (H. RES. 108)

Therefore, please call your House Rep on the phone and request him/her to co-sponsor H. RES. 108. Tell your Rep or the staffer that it's very important *for you* that he/she co-sponsors the Resolution. Follow up your telephone call with a letter/ fax and an e-mail. REMEMBER, a hard copy letter or a fax has much greater value than an e-mail.

You can get contact details of your House Rep by following the procedure described below:

Visit: http://www.congress.org

Type your zip code in the box under 'Elected Officials'. Click: "GO"

You get the pictures of the President , your two Senators and your House Rep.

Click the photograph of your House Rep and you get the contact details (e-mail address, fax and phone numbers).

Once we get a *large number* of House Reps to co-sponsor the bill, we will have to ensure that the legislation moves from the House Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific to the full House International Relations Committee (HIRC) and then to the floor. This will require concerted action -- including well coordinated grassroots action in as many Congressional Districts as possible.
