While Indians are muorning about Kalpana
Chawla, the western agencies are faithfully highlighting a piece of
information about Kalpana Chawla, originated from The Associated Press -

These few lines talk about her ‘So-Called-Mistake’ (Which
NASA has cleared her of) "in her only other space flight, in 1996, that sent
a satellite tumbling out of control, and two spacewalkers had to go out and
capture it"
If this was so, why did NASA send her for this second
mission in first place? The fact is "A post-flight NASA evaluation had
absolved her of blame" ABCNews.
Few lines Profile of a dead person must contain his/her
achievements and not mistakes, if any. It's disheartening to know that this
is the best they can write about Kalpana...one who took risks to go up there.
What exactly they want their readers to infer out of this? There are many
publications that are gleefully publishing this misinformation in Kalpana’s
profile (which is not at all required)
But there is a positive side to this too. Many people
are writing to these media editors with copy to IndiaCause. Guess what? They
are falling in line. NYTimes, MSNBC have already removed this misinformation.
After our mass emails to global media during Maxim issue, they know
IndiaCause very well. Thanks to Maxim.

NYTimes earlier Reported:
"Chawla emigrated to United States
from India in 1980s and became an astronaut in 1994. She was an aerospace
engineer and an FAA Certified Flight Instructor. With CDR Rick Husband, she
was responsible for maneuvering Columbia as part of several experiments in
the shuttle's payload bay. On her only other spaceflight, in 1997, she made
mistakes that sent science satellite tumbling out of control. Other
astronauts had to go on spacewalk to capture it. She had previously logged
more than 376 hours in space."
After several complaints they have changed it to: (Front Page;
About the Crew on Right hand side)
" Dr. Chawla emigrated to United States

MSNBC earlier reported
Kalpana Chawla wanted to design aircraft when she emigrated to the United
States from India in the 1980s. The space program was the furthest thing from
her mind. But "one thing led to another," the 41-year-old engineer said, and
she was chosen as an astronaut in 1994. On her only other space flight, in
1996, Chawla made mistakes that sent a satellite tumbling out of control, and
two spacewalkers had to go out and capture it. Some saw this flight as her
chance to redeem herself.

was the first native of India to fly on a space shuttle but the second in
space, after Rakesh Sharma, who flew on an Indo-Soviet mission in 1984. This
was Chawla's second space flight."
