Aug 08, 2002: Anti-national statements by ASHA Founder?

This is TOI report about statements allegedly made by one of the ‘Asha for Education’ Founders, Dr. Sandeep Pandey who was awarded the 2002 Ramon Magsaysay Award. http://www.ashanet.org/sandeep/

NRI’s in US donate thousands of dollars every year for ASHA programs http://www.ashanet.org/workanhour/

If the report is true ASHA should dissociate with Dr.Pandey as their first step. We hope ASHA will make an official statement on this issue.

The report in TOI says:
“During his recent visit to the Indian Institute of Technology here, Pandey had allegedly tried to justify ISI’s activities in India, saying that RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) was carrying out the same activities in Pakistan. He had also allegedly advocated independence for the people of Kashmir and praised Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf for his positive approach in initiating talks with India.”

Report also quotes Lawyer Nandlal Jaiswal as saying: “Pandey has been running his projects with grant from foreign countries ... and now his statements about India show that he was speaking against India just to please those donors.”

TOI report

And Times of India calls this as “Candid statements on the Kashmir issue and Indo-Pak relations” ???? Is Pandey under pressure from Anti-National elements to make anti-national statements?

Kiran Yedavalli:
I would like to bring to your notice an article in the Times of India about the Magsaysay award winner and founder of ASHA. Agreed that ASHA is helping children in educating them. But the following article has forced me to rethink about ASHA and the founder of ASHA. I would appreciate it if you could let others know about it too. Why is he acting as if he has solutions for all the problems of India?

I have also been told other people that he has been cornered on political matters by ASHA members when he visited USA. I think ASHA is not at fault here and only Snadeep Pandey is. ASHA should not be held resposible for Sandeep Pandey. ASHA should boycot him.

Sanatani (IndiaCause message board):
Boycott ASHA (www.ASHAnet.org)

ASHA's founder, Sandeep Pandey, issued anti-Indian statements at Kanpur recently.

(As usual, Times Of India puts a spin on his comments by calling them "candid statements" read: anti-Indian)

I have been donating to ASHA for a few years now, and participated in their "work-an-hour" and "support-a-child" projects. However, in the light of this news, I have decided to boycott ASHA and find a new charity.

If you have been donating to ASHA in the past, and would like to find a new charity, there are many more US based charities working for India. You'll find many on the web, some of them:
