Billed as the ‘most beautiful heroine’ to have ever graced Indian
silver screen, Aishwarya Rai has finally got engaged to an icon of
Bachchan family on the auspicious day of Makar Sankranti, thereby ending
to the speculation about the two which was making the headlines since an
year ago.
No sooner two got engaged, our over enthusiastic media, more so our
electronic media started running stories after stories on the two and
substantial space on the front of our Tuesday’s newspapers were occupied
with the ‘would be couple’. They also hit the headlines on the Australian
news channel called ABC News as well.
Ever since this couple visited Kashi Vishweshar Temple in November, our
media has been totally obsessed with them and one enthusiastic Hindi news
channel (India TV) went to the extent of predicting that the marriage
between the two might not turn out to be happier!
On one evening it started beaming the pictures by claming to be a
‘breaking news’ that one tantrik from Varanasi was performing pooja in a
crematorium to thwart the possible evil forces which might befall on the
Bachchan family as their would be bride was Manglik as per her
astronomical charts!
It also went to the extent of predicting that if Aishwarya and Abhishek
were to marry then it could spell a doom on senior Bachchan. It went on to
add that their post-marital life would be topsy-turvy and they would get
involved in lot of affairs.
All this was in an extremely bad taste, which might have justifiably
prompted young Abhishek to lament media and question the media, if was
also going to decide how many kids he should have and what should be their
names, etc.
Now the details have started emerging as to how Aishwarya would be wearing
a chudidar worth Rs. 2 lakhs (US $ 4,500!) and how expensive sarees the
family members would be wearing. Some more stories have started appearing
about their personal likes and dislikes which is quite nauseating.
The moot question is how far our media in general and the journalists who
represent it in general should get involved and intrude in the personal
affairs of the celebrities. The bubbling zest of paparazzi in Paris has
already cost lives of Lady Diana in the Royal British family and also that
of Dodi al Fayed, who was the only son of an Egyptian business tycoon.
As on the date, our country is grappling with numerous problems on various
fronts notwithstanding with 8 % growth rate in GDP. Whatever transpires in
the Bachchan’s and or Rai’s families henceforth would not be going to
resolve our common man’s day-to-day problems and miseries. We all will
have to perform and discharge all our daily chores, rituals, duties and
responsibilities, irrespective of happenings in those two hotly debated
families in India.
Hence, it is a high time that our media should become more sensible and
maintain a self-restraint and let Aishwarya & Abhishek to lead their
private life peacefully. The only thing, which we can do and which we must
do, is to bless the duo and leave them alone.
Should it not do so, I am afraid it might make Mr. Amitabh Bachchan once
affectionately called as an ‘angry man’ really angry!
