Patna Daily report on Kanchan-Mishra Abduction Case

E-Mail Campaign Against Alleged Abduction and Marriage
Patna: December 10, 2002

Within a period of last two days, PatnaDaily.Com has been inundated with e-mails from several dozen outraged Web surfers who were reacting to a call for an e-mail campaign launched by a US-based Web site that specializes in initiating such campaigns, in the wake of a news item published on the Internet version of the Outlook magazine.

The visitors of this particular Web site are encouraged to send protest e-mails to all the media and top politicians rebuking them for not publicizing the heinous crime or doing anything to rescue the woman and her child from the clutches of this criminal.

The magazine, in its December 2 online version, printed an article describing a notorious criminal known as Sultan Mian, kidnapped a married woman Kanchan Mishra along with her four-year old child in broad daylight in Patna. She was then, the magazine reports, forcibly taken to a mosque in Mainpura where she was married to Sultan Mian against her wishes.

The report, which was written by Amarnath Tewary of the Outlook-India magazine, went on to say that even a reception was thrown by none other than the Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Ejazul Haque for the criminal and her abducted "bride". Sultan Mian is said to be personally being groomed by yet another criminal-turned-politician, the notorious MP from Siwan, Mohammed Shahabuddin. The officer-in-charge of the local police station was also present at the so-called wedding, the article says.

Meanwhile, the real husband and her brother are desperate to get the woman back to her home where she actually belongs. All the officers and leaders have refused to help them, the article suggests.

PatnaDaily.Com could not independently verify the Outlook-India story for its authenticity, however, if it is true, the matter is of great concern and shame that neither the police nor our Yadavs or Paswans or Modis, who claim themselves to be the champions of poor and downtrodden are able to help the woman or her family members in any way.
